Morakniv Companion, Heavy Duty, Carbon
Hey guys, today I'm going to review the Morakniv Companion HD Carbon. This is on the cheaper end of the scale, but Morakniv has managed to give you a good bang for your buck. This knife is a great size for bushcrafting, and small-medium camp chores.
This knife has a nice blade design, while it is not very wide it gives you plenty of strength. The blade is about 4.1 inches long which is great for all the small-medium chores you need to do. While it is too short to split larger logs, it is durable enough to cut or split smaller ones and you can chop smaller branches well with a baton. The tip is nice and pointy and does great for small and precise tasks, although I think if you were to put a lot of stress on it, it would break or bend. The blade is supposedly made of 1095 high carbon steel, this gives it great edge retention and durability. High carbon steels are prone to rust, to help prevent rust, dry it off when you are done using it and keep a thin layer of oil on it (you can get oils that are specifically for knives, or just use mineral oil.) If you want more rust protection you can force a patina. The blade is not full tang, but I don't think it would break off of the handle unless you put quite a bit of force on it. One thing I don't like about the blade is that the spine is rounded, so you can't strike a ferro rod with it or use it to scrape fatwood.
The handle is part rubber which gives you a good grip. In wet conditions the rubber becomes slimy and is not verry good. It has a kind of belly that fills your hand out and gives you better grip. There is also a little nub on the front of the handle that helps to keep your hand from slipping onto the blade. I don't like that the handle doesn't have a lanyard hole.
Morakniv did well on the sheath design, the belt clip will not come off of your belt... even when you want it to, but it is really a great clip design. the knife stays pretty well in the sheath, if you shake it upside down it will come out. I assume after a while the hold gets weaker. The sheath has a thumb ramp to help you pull the knife out, and it is also easy to put it back in, as the sheath has a wide opening. The sheath also has a drain hole in the bottom, so if your sheath gets wet it will drain out.
All that being said The Morakniv Companion HD Carbon is a great knife for a lower end budget. I was Pleasantly surprised at how well this knife preformed for a budget knife. This knife should be able to handle all the small-medium camp tasks you can throw at it without hesitation.
